Winterberry
(2-3’ bare root) Ilex verticillata 3-12’ tall. Used for Christmas decorations, the female plants produce red to orange fruit that remain on until mid-winter. You need female and male plants to produce berries. Plants you will receive are not sexed (the sex has not been determined). Winterberry must reach a certain age (about 3 years old) before they can be sexed by their flowers. For proper pollination, we recommend planting a minimum of three Winterberry shrubs, preferably more. Plant in groups – as both male and female plants are needed for fruit set. One male can pollinate many (6-10) females as long as they are within 50’ of each other. Once matured, it is easy to determine the sex of a Winterberry shrub by looking at the plant’s flowers. A male Winterberry grows pollen-bearing flowers in clusters, whereas a female plant grows single flowers that are marked with a small green central “knob”. The plant prefers moist to wet soils and full sun for optimal growth. Robins, bluebirds, and catbirds will eat the berries. Native to Vermont. Zone 3-9
